Meet Keanu Dawes, the high school junior who’s beginning to gain the attention of high-major programs across the country, with Tennessee being the latest program to extend an offer. There are clear traits that stand out with Dawes, beginning with his athletic ability at 6’8”. In addition to his physical tools, Dawes poses problems for the opposition on the offensive end as he’s able to stretch the floor, finish strong in the paint, put the ball on the deck in space, and is a smart decision maker. On the defensive end, Dawes can be a nightmare for his opponents, with his length, switchability and prowess as a rim protector.
Last week, Dawes spent time with Pro Insight’s Jake Lieberman to chat about the latest with his recruitment.
For the next installment of “Recruiting Roundup,” we present class of 2023 prospect Keanu Dawes from Stratford, Texas:
Pro Insight: What are you looking to accomplish this high school basketball season? What are your goals?
Keanu Dawes: The main goal is to win state. I feel like we have a good group of hardworking players that mesh well together and have the same goal, so I feel like we have a real chance at surprising everyone and winning state.
PI: Which programs would you say are currently prioritizing you the most or expressing the most interest?
KD: Tennessee, Texas A&M, and Rice all reach out almost daily — so I feel like all three of them really want me.
PI: Where have you visited thus far? Do you have any future visits planned?
KD: I have visited Rice, Texas A&M, and Sam Houston State. I have a visit set up for sometime in January at the University of Texas.
PI: Did you have any dream schools growing up?
KD: My dream school growing up was University of Utah because that’s where I am from, so I was always at their games when I was younger.
PI: If you could team up with any high school player in the country when you guys get to college, who would you pick?
KD: I would pick my current teammate at my high school, Triston Williams. We are super close off the court and I feel like that’s why we play super well together.
PI: How do you project your role at the next level?
KD: I feel like I will be a versatile wing that can really help space the floor for any team.
PI: What are your three main priorities when it comes to your recruitment?
KD: My three main priorities are: will I have a chance to play as a freshman? What position will I be playing? And if they are honest through the whole recruitment process.
PI: How’s your timeline looking?
KD: The plan is to commit during my senior year, or before it starts — so I will make a cut list before then.
PI: What's your pre-game pump-up song/artist?
KD: My pre-game pump up artist is Playboi Carti but more specifically “Stop Breathing” by him.
PI: Which player in the NBA or college would you compare your game to?
KD: I would compare my game to Kevin Durant, just because we are bigger guards.
